2 txt r nt 2 txt: The impact of text language on reading speed.

University of Abertay

Objectives: To examine the effect different types of abbreviation have on reading speed of different age groups.  It is hypothesised that older readers will read abbreviated text slower than younger readers, and that contractions will be read quicker that phonological abbreviations.

Design: The design used will be a mixed design with two factors, one between subjects, and one within subjects.

Methods: Four passages were presented with four language formats.  16 younger and 16 older participants were timed reading each passage and then tested for content knowledge.

Results: The data collected will be in the form of time in seconds taken to read the passage.  The data will be analysed using a 2-way 2x4 ANOVA.

Conclusions: There are potential implications for Scottish teaching staff in secondary schools that have to mark students’ exam responses.
